Minister of Technology and Communications Joe Mucheru has admitted that there are people who have stolen the entire voter register of the IEBC and sell it for about four hundred million shillings. This comes at a time when several Kenyans claim that their voting data has been stolen and used to register them as members of political parties without their consent.
With about 13 months to go before the next general election, the office of the registrar of political parties is embroiled in controversy after several Kenyans found out that their data had been used to register members of several parties without permission. while non-members of any party are registered. it is alleged that this data is being used smuggled as lists of mobile phone users to send money and information harvesting technologies.
According to Communications Minister Joe Mucheru, has this trend increased ” People are now trying to buy the voters register and I think the current porch today is 400 million shillings, although you can get it from IEBC which has not the full numbers Id or phone numbers, these ones some people are selling have everything. ”
This move violates key data protection criteria in the country, stakeholders now want Immaculate Kasait to take action against institutions found guilty of these offenses. “Yes, you can move to court by way of constitutional reparation to affirm your right to privacy and right to freedom of association, this is something that violates your right, to freedom of association, every Kenyan who is aggrieved by this particular incident should call for punishment, and severe punishment not only to the political parties but also the registrar of political parties,” said Immaculate Kasait.
ID numbers are exposed in many portals, including IEBC voter register, which can also be accessed online. Data commission will save people. A lot of data is out there for fraudsters, I tell you
