UK Warns of Security Threat in Kenya

The UK has issued travel advice to citizens planning to travel to Kenya ahead of the eventful time.

In a statement issued by the British High Commission in Nairobi, the embassy warned its citizens not to travel to certain parts of the country because of security threats.

Areas highlighted in red include areas within 60 km of Kenya-Somalia, Garissa and Mandela counties.

The embassy noted that these areas are vulnerable to attacks by al-Shabaab military groups and should therefore be avoided.

The other areas listed are Lamu County (excluding Lamu and Manda Islands) and Tana River District.

“Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Kenya. There is a growing threat from terrorism, including terrorist kidnappings across Kenya. Attacks including terrorist kidnappings could target Westerners, including British nationals.

The UK warned: “Attacks could occur at any time, including around religious or other holidays or celebrations.”

It further noted that attacks typically target crowded areas such as churches, mosques and restaurants.

“Places of worship including churches and mosques have also been attacked. Be especially vigilant in these areas. You should avoid regular patterns of movement and try to travel during the day,” Britain said.

Previously, the National Police Service announced that it would strengthen security measures across the country ahead of the April event.

“Unfortunately, these high-level events also provide opportunities for some criminals to plan disruptive activities that could disrupt organized events and the smooth running of events,” said police spokesman Bruno Shioso.

“Security agencies have also increased surveillance and intelligence capabilities against suspects and organized gangs,” Shioso added.
