17 suspects in connection with attack on Raila Convoy charged with attempted murder

Seventeen suspects linked to the stoning of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s entourage in Soy, Uasin Gishu district, are facing four charges in court.

Sources familiar with the investigation into the incident said the young men faced attempted murder, malicious destruction of property, and sedition charges.
On Saturday, April 2, 2022, the suspects were arrested a day after Odinga’s helicopter was stoned to death.
Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen Kihara said that the suspect provided important information about planning and executing the attack against the former prime minister.

Police had previously said the suspect was found in possession of 50 shillings worth of cash. Authorities believe the money is the price for a nationally talked-about mess. Odinga was leaving the funeral of late businessman Jackson Kibor when he was attacked by a rowdy group of young men in Soy, Eldoret. The orange party leader’s helicopter windshield was damaged in the accident.

The area is believed to be the stronghold of Vice President William Ruto, the President’s standard-bearer of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Police named Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and his soy colleague Caleb Kositany as the attack’s masterminds.
On Sunday, the legislator who maintained his innocence recorded a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) office in Nakuru.

Lawmakers had previously denied claims they were part of the politicians who organized the youth group to attack Raila’s entourage.
Speaking to members of the media in Eldoret, Sudi and Cositani said the DCI investigation was biased and political.

Leaders said they were unaware of the attack and only became aware of it shortly after the incident. They said rivals orchestrated the attack to discredit Ruto’s close allies in the Northern Rift region.
“We’re ready to take the brunt. We’re for justice. We always preach a piece. We’re going to Nakuru to hear this crap. It’s pure nonsense. Whatever they want to do, we’re ready,” Kositani Says before complying with the DCI subpoena.
