11 Presidential Aspirants Disqualified by IEBC details: On Monday, May 23, the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) disqualified 11 politicians from running for president on August 9. Disqualified included Kenya’s Kwanza district governor Wycliffe Musalia Mudawadi and National Assembly Speaker Justin Bedan Njoka Muturi.
At a deliberative meeting with presidential candidates and their surrogates on Monday, May 23, IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati said 11 candidates had failed to submit the names of other candidates by the May 16 deadline. was disqualified.
Other affected presidential candidates include Lengala David William of Jirani Mzalendo’s party, while the rest are independents.
The eight independent candidates are Mbugua Benson Mwaura, Kihuha Esther Waringa, Aoko Benard Ongir, Odhiambo Kevin Onyango, Ndekerere Joseph Kundu, Ngechu Moses Gichuki, Katoni Benjamin Kevin Ndambuki and Nyagoko Jacob Oanda
The IEBC noted that the names of Mudawadi and Muturi were on the list because they had submitted details to the electoral agency before backing the candidacy of Vice President William Ruto.
All presidential candidates must submit the names of other candidates by the May 16 deadline for the committee to properly prepare for the election.
Chebukati explained that they work within a set deadline, so candidates are not allowed to submit the names of their running mates for less than three months.
The IEBC chairman added that they have entered a verification phase where all presidential candidates must submit 2,000 signatures from at least 24 counties before they can compete.
“Once the committee has completed its review of supporters, if the number of signatures is too low to reduce the ban from the list, aspirants will be given a reasonable amount of time to collect the remaining signatures.”
“If you do not receive your signature by the given deadline, you will be banned from the competition,” he explained.
The announcement by the electoral body came days after 55 Kenyans, most of them independent candidates, expressed interest in running for the August 9 election.
