Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has called on President William Ruto, along with cabinet secretaries and Members of Parliament, to take a one-year pay cut as a gesture of solidarity with Kenyans facing severe economic challenges.

During an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, Omondi urged the President to curtail his frequent travels, pointing out the considerable resources being spent that could instead help mitigate the high cost of living for ordinary citizens.

“The President has traveled 68 times in six months, often accompanied by a large delegation. I’ve petitioned the President to reduce his travels. I’m not sure how far it will go,” Omondi stated.

He further challenged the government, including the President, Deputy President, cabinet secretaries, principal secretaries, and Members of Parliament, to take a year-long pay cut.

Omondi argued that some of the President’s foreign trips yield minimal tangible benefits for the country and suggested that sending representatives might be more cost-effective.

“The financial aid secured from Joe Biden following Ruto’s visit does not justify the expenses incurred, including the cost of the plane used. We must hold this government accountable,” he emphasized.

“When the President travels, he is accompanied by a large delegation. He doesn’t need to accept every invitation, especially since it’s taxpayer money being spent.”
