National Assembly clerk Samuel Njoroge has dismissed reports that they plan to send Members of Parliament (MPs) to Qatar to watch the World Cup.
Mr. Njoroge said he has not received any such request as the National Assembly’s accounting officer. He also added that Parliament has been working to cut down on unnecessary spending.
“We are not aware of any request to send members to Qatar and in any case, we are implementing austerity measures, some of which may not allow us to spend money on a venture like this,” noted the assembly clerk.
Moreover, Njoroge’s remarks follow reports that the National Assembly is planning to send at least 15 MPs led by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and other parliamentary staff to Qatar for the World Cup.
According to those reports, the team has sought authorization from the Speaker’s office to facilitate the trip immediately after the East Africa Legislative Assembly games that are set to begin next week.
Furthermore, the reports state that the MPs will have all their expenses, including airfare, accommodation, and daily allowances, footed by taxpayers’ money.
Additionally, the MPs representing various sporting activities will leave the country after recess to enjoy the football extravaganza.
Nonetheless, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi had publicly confirmed that he will be in the delegation to Qatar alongside Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
Likewise, a delegation of 20 MPs attended the World Cup in Russia in 2018, something that triggered a public uproar. When they returned the MPs plagiarized sports websites to compile their report on their World Cup experience.
