Gov’t Declares Friday a Public Holiday Over Kibaki’s Funeral Service

The government has declared Friday, April 29, a national holiday.

The memorial service for former President Mwai Kibaki will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium on the same day.

Cabinet Secretary Fred Mattionyi, chairman of the National Funeral Steering Committee, said the day would be used to pay tribute to the late former head of state. “The government has declared Friday, April 29, 2022, a national holiday to allow for a proper state funeral for the late President,” the Kenya Gazette reads,” CS said.

Former President Mwai Kibaki To Be Buried on April 30 in Othaya

“The state funeral of the third (3) President will be held on Friday, April 29 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi County, with all military honours and ceremonies.”
Following the state funeral, Kibaki will hold a private funeral at Othaya’s home on Saturday, April 30. Public prayers will be held at the Othaya Stadium on the same day.

The next of kin will attend the funeral, which will be carried out in accordance with his will.

From Monday to Wednesday, members of the public can pay their respects at the parliament building where his body will lie in state.
