Four Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) engineers were killed after their convoy was attacked by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Garissa on Wednesday morning.
Police said the victims lost their lives when the vehicle they were traveling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) believed to have been planted by the Al-Shabaab elements.
The IED exploded, completely destroying the first vehicle‒a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin with the registration number KBV 502S.
The KenHA engineers, who were on a routine assessment of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor road, were traveling in a convoy of three vehicles from Garissa to Hailey Chinese Camp and then on to Bura East.
The other two vehicles turned back to the Hailey Chinese camp immediately after the attack.
Police managed to retrieve three bodies from the scene while the fourth body is believed to have been completely destroyed in the blast.
This is not the first time the Lapsset Road has been targeted by Al-Shabaab militants. In January last year, eight vehicles operating the LAPSSET highway project were set on fire by suspected Al-Shabaab fighters.
Garissa, which lies on the Kenya-Somalia border continues to face the threat of attacks from the Somalia-based al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group.
