US issues another security alert in Kenya

The US has advised Kenyan residents against visiting at least six counties. On February 9, US citizens were warned to be wary in Nairobi.

As Kenya deployed more security forces in the six Rift Valley counties to address security, public order, and safety risks, the US Embassy in Nairobi issued the latest advisory.

Turkana, West Pokot, and Elgeyo Marakwet counties are among these (Marakwet East and Marakwet West Sub-counties).

Baringo, Laikipia, and Samburu counties are the others (Loroki and Kirisia Divisions).

The Kenyan Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government issued Public Order No. 1 of 2023 implementing a 30-day nighttime curfew in certain locations. The US Embassy stated that the Order prohibits public meetings and travel from dusk until daybreak.

This public order also prohibits US government workers from entering the areas.

The Kenyan government called the US and UK terror alerts “absolutely sad” last week but warned Kenyans to stay watchful as it celebrated the country’s victory over al-Shabaab.

Dr. Korir Sing’oei, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, said the country was making progress against al-Qaeda.

“Unilateral terror alerts are sad, but they have been issued owing to pressure Al-Shabaab is feeling in Somalia from the combined efforts of Somali administration, community, and our troops. Dr. Sing’oei remarked, “They are on the run and may have crossed our borders.”

The UK and US commended Kenyan security measures, including counter-terrorism patrols.
