Kibaki’s grandson didn’t refuse to shake Raila’s hand
Kenyans have debated whether one of the grandsons of late President Mwai Kibaki snubbed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s handshake.
A fact-check of the original video footage showed Raila and the young man shaking hands as they returned to their seats.
Videos circulating online have been edited to make it appear that the young grandson ignored Raila. It has since caused a stir on social media platforms, with politically divided factions using it to advance their agendas.
In an election year, politicians and their supporters use social media to advance their narratives and throw dirty water at each other. Social media has become a platform for tarnishing reputations and accumulating miles ahead of the August election.
In an effort to combat hate speech, the National Commission on Cohesion and Integration (NCIC) flagged 36 bloggers accused of posting speech bordering on hate speech and hate speech.
Chairman of NCIC, Ph.D. Samuel Kobia confirmed that the commission would go after 36 people linked to political leanings for their comments and dangerous remarks on social media.
The 36 bloggers are behind a coordinated attack orchestrated by the Azimio la Umoja coalition and the Kenyan Kwanza coalition, led by Raila Odinga and Vice President William Ruto, respectively.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Cobia explained that the commission has taken nine cases to court so far, while 27 others are still under investigation.
“We will publish their names soon,” Cobia said, adding that they would try to ban the controversial social media accounts.
“The 36 individuals are being closely monitored and the committee is currently investigating to ensure they are brought to justice,” said Dr. Cobia.
The NCIC also condemned political parties for using social media to promote hatred and violence in the country this campaign season.
