The Senate Armed Services Committee interviewed a candidate for Secretary of the Navy. Texas Senator Lillian DeHaven criticized the Navy for not being gender-neutral. A deal is being struck behind the scenes: If women score higher than men on a range of test cases, the military will fully integrate women into all jobs in the Navy.
The first test was the U.S. Navy Joint Reconnaissance Team (similar to SEAL UDT/BUD[2]). Senator DeHaven chose terrain analyst, Lt. Jordan O’Neil, because of her more feminine body than other candidates.
To get that grade, O’Neal had to endure a grueling selection program that has seen nearly 60 percent of candidates eliminated, mostly before week four, with a particularly intense third week (“week of hell”). The enigmatic commander-in-chief John James Urgel guides the training program, which spans 20 hours of missions designed to drain recruits both physically and mentally, including pushing giant ship fenders up sand dunes, navigating obstacle courses and Tow the landing raft.

Faced with a 30-second “gender norm” allowance in the obstacle course, O’Neal demanded to maintain the same standards as male cadets.
The Master Chief watched as O’Neal helped the other contestants to climb on their backs and over the wall’s barriers. Eight weeks into the program, during SERE training in Captiva, Florida, the Master Chief tied her to a chair with his hands behind his back, grabbed her, punched her through a door, then lifted her off the floor and dunked, Repeat her head in icy water in front of the rest of the crew. O’Neal retaliated and managed to inflict some damage on him, although her arm was immobile. In doing so, she gained the respect of him and the other trainees.
Navy leaders believed a woman would soon disembark, and they became concerned. When the media learned of O’Neal’s involvement, she became a sensation known as “GI Jane.” She soon had to deal with fabricated allegations that she was lesbian and had friendly relations with women.
