Police raided Fred Matiang’i’s Karen, Nairobi home.
The former CS is in his home, his lawyer Danstan Omari told the media at 10:30pm Wednesday.
I can assure all Kenyans that Matiang’i’s life is in danger. We don’t know why Matiangi’s home was invaded at night. We don’t know why. His crime is unknown. “Our client is ready to appear before any police station and record a statement if they have anything to charge him with,” said Omari.
Omari said Matiang’i’s lawyers were “protecting” him at home.
We have over 200 lawyers guarding our client’s house. “We’ll stay until morning so we can follow the law when Matiang’i is arrested,” Omari said.
Lawyers and Azimio leader Raila Odinga condemned the night action.
“I was shocked to hear that police have surrounded former Interior CS Matiang’i’s home at this hour. As things change, they stay the same. Late-night arrests and uncharged detentions are returning to this country. This seems to be returning to our nation.
Mr. Matiang’i, a Kenyan, committed a crime. It’s time to serve him a police station notice. Police should not enter a home at this time of day when people are sleeping. “If Matiang’i has committed a crime that warrants his arrest, he can go and present himself at a police station for interrogation and record a statement,” said Raila.
After the raid, more lawyers attended the night press briefing. Former CS Matiang’i called another lawyer, Sammy Iberi.
“Our client called us to say he was threatened and that his life is in danger because police are coming to arrest him at night. Police follow a procedure when investigating a suspect. They summon that person to a police station and give a statement under inquiry stating that they suspect the person of interest is committing a crime.
They then ask this person what he knows about the case. We’ve been told police are coming from 2–3 p.m. What they will do is unknown. “They haven’t said what they want or what interest they have in Dr. Matiang’i,” Iberi said.
The lawyers blamed the police for nighttime activities at ex-CS Matiang’i’s home.
“We do not understand why police can arm themselves to come and arrest our client in the dead of night and disturb his sleep.” “Iberi.”
