Ruto pledges to make HELB a grant

Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday promised to ensure that the Higher Education Loans Board remits students’ funds in time.

While addressing residents of Kitui on Tuesday, Ruto said his government will ensure that there are no interests rates on Helb loan and also ensure that the program becomes a grant.

“There will be no interest on the Helb loans. We will also make sure that Helb money becomes a grant and not a loan. Secondly, the amount of money students get is too small. It is supposed to be added so that comrades can sort their expenses,” Ruto said.

He added: “HELB Inachelewa sana. Inakuja ikiwa imechelewa hadi kinaumana!.”

Roughly translated: “Funds are delayed so much that it becomes unbearable. Funds are released when things get out of hand.”

Ruto said he will ensure no students are bound by the CRB for unpaid loans.

Previously, students had asked Helb to consider increasing funding.

Students say the tuition hikes seen at several institutions are too costly for them.

Anthony Manyara, president of the University of Kenya’s student body, called on student leaders to meet with Helb to tackle financial challenges.

“At a time when college tuition has nearly tripled at almost all institutions, Helb must also increase to match what students are expected to pay,” Manyara said.
