KNH Othaya Annex Hospital Renamed After Kibaki
Kenyatta National Hospital Othaya Annex was renamed Mwai Kibaki Hospital in honor of late President Mwai Kibaki.
Level 6 Hospital is currently undergoing renovations ahead of the late Kibaki’s funeral in Othaya on Saturday, April 30.

Construction of the hospital started in 2010 and was completed in 2019. At the time, the hospital was called Ortaya Level 6 Hospital.
During the takeover, it was suggested that the hospital should be named Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital, according to 2018 Nyeri County government documents. However, this did not happen.
“The medical facility, which took more than eight years to complete, has been renamed the Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital in honour of the retired local director.
“Since then, the hospital has installed a large amount of equipment, waiting for the national government to recruit and deploy human resources,” according to a 2018 statement from the county government.
As Kibaki’s cabinet minister revealed, the late president didn’t want any projects named after him.
In an interview with the media on Wednesday, April 27, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka revealed that Kibaki opposed the renaming of the Thika highway after him.
Following his death, several leaders, including Senate candidate Beth Mugow, called on the administration to rename the highway after the late president, among other legacy projects.
Among the projects named after his family is the Mama Lucy Hospital, the former first lady who passed on in 2016.
