Embakasi East MP Babu Owino criticized President William Ruto’s Tuesday prayer service announcement.
The MP thinks the Nyayo Stadium drought and hunger event will be pointless unless the government eliminates hunger.
“Prayer without action is useless. Prayer without action is sinful. So, “Babu said.
The outspoken MP saw the prayer ceremony as hypocritical as over four million people need humanitarian relief due to the drought.
“How could they utilize the sacred ritual of prayer to put on a mantle of compassion when the gut-wrenching pain of families and communities continues daily?” he said.
Ruto said Sunday’s interdenominational service in Nakuru will pray for rain and God’s protection on Tuesday.
“Have services somewhere and pray for the country,” he stated.
The President added that his government has laid aside seeds and fertilizers for agriculture, but without rain, nothing will work.
“We need God to move on,” Ruto said.
The President said religious leaders will attend the 8 am–4 pm prayers.
On Friday, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi pledged to increase irrigation from 670,000 acres to three million acres to ensure food security.
Mudavadi encouraged public-private cooperation at the Global Hunger Index Report launch.
“I invite the business sector to collaborate with the government in ensuring we transition the country from dependent on rain-fed agriculture and vulnerability to drought and climate change,” he said.
Turkana, Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Laikipia, Garissa, Tana River, Mandera, Wajir, Kitui, and Kajiado are in drought alert.
