Mary Lilian Waithera, a NHIF staff member, was laid to rest in Kamugunda village in Kirinyaga county following her brutal murder. The funeral was attended by Waithera’s family, friends, colleagues, and members of the clergy. They described Waithera as a hard worker, loving wife, and doting mother of two sons. They also called for a speedy investigation into her death, condemning the heinous act and urging those responsible to repent. Father Wilfred Mwaura, a Catholic priest, denounced the murder and called on the perpetrators to face God’s wrath or repent. Waithera’s family forgave her killers but demanded justice to be served.
Waithera collapsed mysteriously on Kaunda street in Nairobi’s CBD on February 13 while leaving work with a colleague. Despite efforts to save her life, she died on the scene, and an autopsy later revealed that she had been shot in the lungs. Her family described her death as a big blow to them and the nation due to her industrious and committed spirit.
The mourners, while forgiving those who killed Waithera, called on the authorities to apprehend and bring the perpetrators to book. The funeral was a solemn event, with mourners paying their respects to Waithera, whose memories will forever be cherished by her family and friends.
