Manchester United close in on top-four spot with win over Wolve

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has praised Antony and Alejandro Garnacho following the club’s 2-0 Premier League win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Red Devils had returned to winning ways at Old Trafford, with Antony being hugely influential to the result with a lively first-half performance. The Brazilian was impressive with his runs behind the backline and he set up Anthony Martial to score in the 32nd minute. Antony continued to impress following the half-time interval and was unlucky not to score as Daniel Bentley made an outstanding save to deny him.

Garnacho, meanwhile, was splendid in his short cameo off the bench. He caught the eye with his direct running and put the game to bed in stoppage time, showing brilliant composure to find the back of the net in off the woodwork after being put through on goal by Bruno Fernandes.

After the victory, Ten Hag said that Antony had a ‘very good game’ and was a constant threat, adding that he was happy with Garnacho’s impact. The Red Devils provided the perfect response on the back of successive away losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United over the past week, with the win putting them on 66 points for the campaign. They need a maximum of six points from their remaining three league games to guarantee a top-four spot.

United’s next game is on the road against Bournemouth next weekend, and the Red Devils could secure Champions League qualification with a win if Liverpool lose at Leicester City on Monday. Overall, the victory over Wolves was a much-needed boost for Manchester United after a disappointing run of results, and the performances of Antony and Garnacho will give Ten Hag plenty of encouragement as he looks to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
