Stand off as ex-CS Matiang’i refuses to record statement

by Deep dickens

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i refused to record a statement and invoked his right to remain silent, causing a stalemate at DCI. Matiang’i’s legal team reminded investigators of a court order restraining any intended arrest, frustrating the investigators who threatened to arrest him. Matiang’i is accused of spreading false information about a failed raid on his Karen house in February 2023. Charges against him include causing the publication of false information, contrary to the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act of 2018. The head of serious crime, Michael Sang, believes that Matiang’i could either be connected to the offense or provide information that could assist in the investigation.

Matiang’i arrived with lawyers and was questioned by four senior officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau. By mid-day, there were no signs of them getting out amid reports that there were plans to charge Matiang’i. Security was tight at DCI, with officers from the Anti Terror Police Unit guarding the entrance. Matiang’i’s legal team stated that they had anticipatory bail orders and would not allow their client to be detained unnecessarily. Matiang’i had returned to the country on Saturday. The situation remains tense as investigators are determined to pursue the case, and Matiang’i is asserting his constitutional rights. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days.
