Raila Odinga stoned in Ruto’s backyard
On Friday, April 1, Azimio la Umoja’s flag-bearer Raila Odinga was forced to cancel his political activities in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet district.
Mr. Odinga, who is touring the North Rift Valley region under Vice President William Ruto, began with an in-room session at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Iteng, before addressing the city’s crowd.
The region’s governor, Alex Tolgos, introduced Mr. Odinga to a roadside rally, but residents began chanting “United Democratic Alliance (UDA)”.
When the young people refused to let the presidential candidate Azimio finish his speech, police efforts to stop them failed.
Mr Odinga tried to lure them by describing what the Azimio la Umoja government would achieve for the area, but when he said “Inawezekana” (it is possible), the resident replied: “Ruto”.
While stressing the need for a peaceful election, Odinga said his government would work with everyone, including those who did not support him.
Kipkorir Menjo, the region’s ODM chief, who was also one of the organizers of the Raila event, condemned the event and urged Rift Valley residents to be tolerant.
“This is happening because of the influence of our opponents, who don’t want us to sell our agenda in the region. There will be no vote today. Why send someone to scold us?” Mr Menjo poses.
Leaders accompanying Mr Odinga, including Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, were unable to speak to the crowd.
Raila Odinga never pay anyone to attend his rallies more so those from interior places like Iten in Rift Valley. So these guys were either payed to come heckle Raila Odinga or they couldn't resist Baba's charm either way Azimio won. They got the message and they will sleep on it. pic.twitter.com/cbRFXQwppM
