Information Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo unveiled elements of the first smartphone made in Kenya on Tuesday, January 10.
The smartphones currently being produced at the Konza Technopolis factory in Malili, Machakos County will have fully loaded Android capability.
“The telecom companies have realized that in the near future Kenya needs to become a manufacturer of phones and low-cost technology rather than a main importer, so we are going to start manufacturing, the technology is already here and we are going to roll out this initiative by July,” explained Owalo out.
The first batch of made-in-Kenya phones will cost around $40, which should be between Ksh4,000 and Ksh5,000.
Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication Technology and Digital Economy, Eliud Owalo, will arrive at KBC on Tuesday 1 November 2022.
According to CS Owalo, mass production of the smartphones has rightly begun and the first batch will be on sale in August 2023.
A collaboration with the American tech giant Google gives the smartphone basic functions such as calling, texting, timing and calendar applications.
At the same time, the smartphone allows users to install other mobile secondary applications.
The first smartphone made in Kenya will run three types of mobile apps: native, web and hybrid applications.
In the Kenya-made smartphone, native apps will be built specifically for a mobile device’s Android operating system (OS).
The smartphone also gains access to web apps that provide users with a great digital experience through browsers.
Kenya’s smartphone will not have standalone web apps, but will provide access to resources through responsive websites that adapt their user interface to the devices.
The third type of mobile apps that Kenya-made smartphones will run are hybrid applications that are essentially web apps that look and feel like native apps.
The Kenyan smartphone has an app icon on the home screen, responsive design, fast performance and can even function offline.
“Not only will we be able to meet the demand in the local market, we will also have a surplus for export,” added CS Owalo.
Given that smartphones made in Kenya will run on the powerful Android operating system (OS) developed by Google, these devices will make up 70 percent of all phones purchased around the world.
CS Owalo also confirmed that Kenya plans to develop and export technologies such as software.
on Thursday November 10 President William Ruto revealed that his administration was planning to start producing affordable smartphones.
“The real last mile in technology is the gadgets and we are working with our telcos so that we can have a smartphone that is under ksh5,000,” the president said while addressing the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KNCCI) Annual General Meeting.
