Adelle Onyango, a renowned Kenyan radio presenter, social activist, and media personality, has launched the Safe 24/7 program through her initiative. The program offers free group therapy to women who have survived rape and is aimed at helping them heal from trauma and learn different coping mechanisms. The program, designed by clinical psychologists, spans 14 weeks and is carried out in partnership with Carolina For Kibera.
Onyango has been recognized for her work, having been named one of 2017’s BBC100 Women and one of OkayAfrica’s Top Women of 2018. She worked as a presenter for Kiss FM Nairobi for seven years, where she hosted the Saturday breakfast show and started a program playing African music in the evenings. Her influence extended beyond the airwaves, with her followers on social media calling themselves #TeamAdelle.
In 2019, Onyango left Kiss FM and launched the podcast Legally Clueless in March of the same year. The podcast, which is syndicated by Trace 95.3 FM, has both audio and video formats and has gained a large following. In November 2019, Meru University of Science and Technology hosted a live episode of Legally Clueless, and in February 2021, Onyango celebrated the release of the podcast’s 100th episode. The podcast was also one of the top podcasts on Spotify in August 2021.
Onyango is also a co-author, along with Lanji Ouku, of the book Our Broken Silence, which documents the experiences of survivors of rape, family members, activists, and others. The book was published in March 2022.
Through her various initiatives and projects, Adelle Onyango has shown her commitment to empowering women and helping survivors of trauma. The launch of the Safe 24/7 program is yet another example of her dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of those around her.
