Detectives hunt down KCSE candidate who fled after being caught cheating

On Wednesday, criminal investigation (DCI) investigators launched a manhunt for a KCSE candidate who sneaked out of a test center in Mogotio, Baringo, in an attempt to cheat.

Ladat Secondary School student Kennedy Ruto is said to have fled the exam centre to get exam materials for yesterday’s farm work.

In the incident that led to the scene at the facility, DCI said Ruto donned civilian clothes to hide his school uniform and jumped over the school fence to a nearby compound.

Investigators near the school became suspicious and pursued the student.

Apparently, while they were discussing the newspaper, Ruto and two other unidentified men were quietly running in different directions when sniffer dogs arrested them. They left a cell phone with a copy of the geography and physics papers released on Tuesday and the agricultural paper the candidate sat yesterday.

With the help of detectives stationed at the DCI Cyber and Digital Forensics Lab, police are tracking down the student and his accomplices.

Meanwhile, as the drama unfolded, Nairobi detectives charged four other suspects at Milimani Court, part of a larger syndicate called Bailing Out, after the Kalee syndicate was arrested two weeks ago.

Police believe the four leading exam scammers were taking the ongoing KCSE exam, buying test papers and answers on social media groups with thousands of followers.

Gideon Tanui, Kevin Kiprotich, Judges Leting and James Obongo all pleaded not guilty and were released on equal bond of Shs 300,000 and Shs 500,000 respectively. More suspects were arrested in Mbita, Garbatula and Turkana and more than 60 cellphones confiscated in a nationwide operation by DCI detectives to ensure the credibility of the national investigation.

Cybercrime investigators are currently analyzing the phones for more criminal material on the suspect’s airtight case.
