De Gea matches Manchester United clean sheet record

During Sunday’s 3-0 win over Leicester City, David de Gea tied Peter Schmeichel for most Manchester United clean sheets.
On his 521st appearance for the Red Devils, the Spaniard kept his 180th clean sheet.

In Thursday’s Europa League match against Barcelona, De Gea may match Schmeichel’s 386 shutouts.

The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper saved Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho in the first half to preserve his record-equalling clean sheet.

Marcus Rashford’s brace and Jadon Sancho’s goal helped Erik ten Hag’s rejuvenated side win comfortably in the second half.

Third-placed Man United are now three points behind Manchester City after De Gea’s 10th Premier League clean sheet.

Ten Hag said his team played well “”I was pretty upset by our performance,” De Gea told Sky Sports News after the goalless first half.

“Our regulations must be followed. If you don’t, it’s a disaster and you give good teams like Leicester chances.

“Only David de Gea kept us scoreless. We were fortunate to lead 1-0 at halftime. Rashy’s finish and Bruno’s pass were excellent. Rest was garbage.”

After Edwin van der Sar retired in 2011, Manchester United purchased De Gea from Atlético Madrid for €25m (£22.2m).

In his second year at Manchester United, De Gea won the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and three Community Shields.

As his Old Trafford contract expires at the conclusion of the season, the 32-year-future old’s has been in doubt for years.

Man United have not activated his contract extension until 2024, unlike Rashford, Fred, Diogo Dalot, and Luke Shaw.

De Gea, Man United’s highest paid at £375,000 per week, is reportedly willing to take a pay reduction to sign a new contract.

The Spain international predicted contract discussions with Man United will end in a “nice way,” although the Red Devils are reportedly considering Leeds United’s Illan Meslier as a replacement.
