Madaraka day: Sierra Leone president Julius Maada Wonie Bio to to be chief guest: Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Wonie Bio will be the key guest at this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for June 1.
Foreign Affairs C.S. Amb Raychelle Omamo made the announcement Saturday night after receiving the president at JKIA.
“…It will also mark the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, which is celebrated today at the Embakasi International Peace Support Center,” Omamo said on Sunday.
President Bio is on a five-day state visit to the country, where he is expected to hold bilateral talks with the President of the host country, Uhuru Kenyatta.
During the talks, seven letters of intent to further deepen relations were signed.
This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations come 69 days before Kenyans go to the polls to elect Kenya’s fifth new president.
It will also be the last national celebration of Uhuru and will be held at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, which he calls the “People’s Garden”.
The garden was opened to the public last year during the Jamhuri Day celebrations, where the festivities took place but was then closed to allow certain sections to be completed.
President Uhuru chose this garden as the site for the last public celebration of his term in the country.
After the country achieved republic status in 1963 and 1964, Kenyans gathered at Uhuru Gardens to celebrate their independence. At least 30,000 Kenyans are expected to attend and join Uhuru to celebrate their last national celebration, which will also be the last of the anniversary system.
Interior Minister Karanja Kibicho led the National Celebration Committee to examine ongoing preparations for the Spotted Day celebrations in the gardens.
