Kirinyaga Water and Sanitation Company Limited (Kiriwasco) plans to introduce an automatic prepaid water metering system to improve water supply efficiency.
The Token Meter was introduced for a pilot at an event in Sagana last Saturday.
In a speech delivered by the environment, water, and natural resources executive Jackan Gutu during the launch of Kiriwasco’s 2021-2026 strategic plan, Anne Waiguru said the system would provide a lasting solution to persistent water bills dissatisfaction. Waiguru said the system will also help customers control their spending on water, outage detection, tamper notification, and reduced labor costs.
The company will also reduce the cost of deploying meter readers because the meters have accurate water usage data for billing purposes.
“The installation of automatic water meters is a commendable move that the company has embraced and will certainly position it as one of the most competitive water companies in the country,” she said.
Kiriwasco is now the fourth company to launch such a measuring device. These meters are already in use in Malindi, Bomet, and Eldoret.
The governor also commissioned the construction of a water bottling plant, which will help the company enter the bottled water market and expand its revenue stream.
“The bottling plant will strengthen the company’s revenue base,” the governor added.
Data provided by Kiriwasco shows the county has a 66 percent water supply rate. Of Kirinyaga County’s June 2020 total population forecast of 618,339, 135,445 are served by 76 small unregulated water service providers and 275,364 are served by two regulated water service providers, for a total of 407,809 people.
The Governor said the launch of the Kiriwasco strategic plan for 2021-2026 provides district residents with the highest standards of water and sanitation.
